Open AI File

AI file extension is used by files produced by Adobe Illustrator. AI is a vector image format which means it stores graphics information as a set of geometrical figures with their coordinates, sizes and transformations.

Prior to version 8.0 Adobe Illustrator saved AI files in a native Adobe Illustrator only format called PGF, but Adobe Illustrator 8.0 and later started saving AI files in EPS format with PDF compatibility option. AI files produced by Adobe Illustrator are in part binary and in part text format and could be problematic for viewing in text editor. You will need a specialized software to open it.

There are many applications which can open AI files. Popular vector image editing software packages like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape can open AI files for editing. Certain raster image editing tools like Adobe Photoshop are also able to import AI files.

Free software packages which are able to open AI files are:

  • Inkscape - Open-source free vector graphics editor.
  • Scribus - Open-source desktop publishing software.

  • sK1

It is also possible that AI file that you have was produced by Battlefield 2 game. This game uses AI files to store game artificial intelligence settings. In this case AI file is a plain text file which can be viewed and modified in any text editor.
