DWG File

AutoCAD Drawing (DWG) is a popular CAD file format. It was introduced by Mike Riddle in 1970 and later licensed by AutoDesk for use in its AutoCAD application. Due to popularity of AutoCAD software DWG was widely adopted in the industry. At this moment it is supported by many of the CAD applications including Caddie, IntelliCad, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, FreeCAD, Adobe Illustrator and many others.

There are multiple applications that can open DWG files. Free or freemium applications include:

  • LibreCAD
  • FreeCAD
  • Teigha Viewer
  • AutoDesk DWG TrueView
  • ShareCAD

There also many paid applications which can open files in DWG format. The ones with the best support are Autodesk applications since it owns the format development. Other applications with DWG support are Caddie, IntelliCAD, BricsCAD, SolidWorks, CorelDRAW.

You can also open and view DWG files online using AutoDesk DWG online viewer which can open DWG, RVT, SolidWorks and STEP file formats and display them in a browser.

DWG is a vector image format which stores information in a form of points, lines, curves and shapes. DWG is a binary file format which means it can only be interpreted only by applications which know how to parse it. DWG file structure is quite similar to other vector graphics file: it consists of multiple objects of different types and relations between them.

DWG files could also be opened on mobile devices using Autodesk AutoCAD mobile app. It is available in free and paid version and supports 2D DWG files at the moment.

DWT and DWS file formats are based on DWG format and are used to store drawing templates and standards correspondingly. DWF is also a DWG based format which includes support of encryption and access rights management. It was specifically designed to allow distribution of CAD content to large groups of people.
